The Buttrey's began
worshipping at Peninsula
Baptist in 1974, just
after Paul’s graduation
from Gordon-Conwell Theological
Seminary and Mary Jeanne’s
from Columbia University’s
College of Physicians
and Surgeons. Paul served
as an InterVarsity Christian
Fellowship staff member
for the next 5 years,
while Mary Jeanne was
completing her training
in Internal Medicine at
Harbor General Hospital.
In 1980, they went to
Taiwan with OMF.
Their first term included
2 years of full-time Mandarin
language study, followed
by 2 years of internship
in a Chinese church. It
was then that they embarked
on another exciting adventure:
Gail Kristine was born
March 31, 1983! Following
a year at home in 1984,
they returned to Taiwan
with Paul assuming administrative
responsibilities as Assistant
to the Taiwan Area Director.
After several years as
an assistant, Paul took
on the role of Area Director
in 1991. As well as providing
leadership for OMF’s
70-90 missionaries in
Taiwan, he was responsible
for a number of projects,
including formal registration
of the mission with the
government, construction
of a missionary retreat
center in southern Taiwan,
purchase of a new office
for OMF, and representation
of OMF both in the larger
mission community in Taiwan
and in various Chinese
churches and Christian
organizations. In 1997,
he was able to step down
from the leadership and
begin teaching at the
Christ’s Disciples’
Training Institute, thus
returning to his first
vision of training pastors
and lay leaders for the
church. He also serves
on the editorial board
of Taiwan Mission Quarterly
and is a facilitator for
Interpersonal Skills Workshops.
Mary Jeanne has continued
teaching medical students
and young physicians at
Mackay Hospital, with
opportunities to share
the gospel with nonbelievers
and mentor Christian professionals.
Now licensed to practice
in Taiwan, she plans to
participate in management
of patients with AIDS
at Mackay. She has a ministry
of discipling and encouragement
among women at Kang Hua
Church and has recently
joined the choir.
Gail is a senior in high
school and will be attending
college in the United
States next year.

in 1984, they returned
to Taiwan with Paul assuming
administrative responsibilities
as Assistant to the Taiwan
Area Director, which included
an initial 2 years of
caring for new missionaries
in language school, in
the central city of Tai
chung. In 1987, they moved
to Taipei. Mary Jeanne
took up a teaching ministry
at Mackay Memorial Hospital,
while Paul started working
out of the OMF office.
They became involved in
the Kang Hua Independent
Mandarin Church, where
they have been privileged
to serve and worship up
to the present.
After several years as

Gail enjoyed 2 years in
a Chinese pre-school.
Her subsequent education
has been at Morrison Academy,
an American-style school
established for missionary
children. One of her most
enjoyable activities is
band, where she plays
tenor saxophone. In the
past year, she participated
in an evangelistic drama
team. While the Buttreys
are on Home Assignment
this year, she is attending
the Stony Brook School
in New York, a Christian
college preparatory school.
